Concreting of the foundation of the reactor building of power unit No. 4 has been completed at Leningrad NPP-2

Written by neftegaz.ru

It took the builders 80 days to complete the work - this is a new record.

Moscow, June 12 - IА. Neftegaz.RU. Concreting of the reactor building foundation эfor power unit No.4 completed at Leningrad NPP-2.
This was reported by the press service of Rosatom.

Construction details

  • parameters of the building structure:
    • area - 2.1 thousand m2,
    • height - 2 m;
  • to make the foundation for the reactor building, the builders used:
    • steel reinforcement with a diameter of 16 to 40 mm (almost 2 thousand tons),
    • special heavy concrete of high strength class (more than 4 thousand m3 of concrete mix);
  • the work took 80 days,
    • for comparison, it took specialists 103 days to carry out a similar operation at block No. 3 in 2024.

Theses of the Director of Leningrad NPP V. Pereguda:

  • the results of 2024 and 2025 convincingly prove that we are coping with the tasks set;
  • in 2024, builders concreted the lower part of the foundation for the reactor building of power unit No. 3 VVER-1200 in 103 days - this is 12 days ahead of the deadline stipulated by the local schedule;
  • in 2025 we reached a record 80 days;
  • while the quality of construction and installation works remains at the highest level;
  • this is confirmed by the findings of inspection checks.

Theses by K. Khudyakov, Director of Leningrad NPP Facilities Program, Titan-2 Concern;

  • at the same power unit in May we also completed the construction of the foundation slab of the security building ahead of schedule, and today we are making good progress on the foundation of the control building;
  • by the end of 2025, we plan to prepare and commission 4 more foundations of the nuclear iceland (a complex of buildings and structures that ensure the safe operation and reliable functioning of nuclear installations);
  • at power unit No. 3, we are preparing for the large-scale assembly and installation in its proper place of the first tier of the internal protective shell of the reactor building and for the installation of the installation of the melt localization device;
  • there are no risks for these key operations.

Now builders are taking care of the concrete to help it gain strength.
Once the quality of the lower part of the foundation is confirmed, they will begin reinforcing and concreting its upper part, increasing its thickness by almost another 1.5 m.
Also, builders and fitters will begin to erect walls and ceilings, lay pipelines provided for in the project, install sealed penetrations and mount equipment.

In total, construction and installation work is being carried out at the construction site of the 4th stage of  Leningrad NPP at 16 facilities of power unit No. 3 and at 9 facilities of power unit No. 4. The main efforts, as noted, are concentrated on the nuclear islands.

Leningrad NPP

  • one of the largest nuclear power plants in Russia in terms of installed capacity - 4,400 MW;
  • 4 RBMK-1000 units and 2 VVER-1200 units are in operation here;
  • RBMK-1000 power units No. 1 and No. 2 have been shut down for decommissioning after 45 years of service;
  • they were replaced in 2018 and 2021 by 2 VVER-1200 units;
  • their design service life is 60 years with the possibility of extension by 20 years;
  • two more new power units No. 7 and No. 8 VVER-1200 LNPP are planned to be put into operation in 2030 and 2032, respectively;
  • they will become replacement capacities for RBMK-1000 power units No. 3 and No. 4;
  • the annual output of each VVER-1200 power unit is more than 8.5 billion kWh.

In February 2025, the service life of power unit No. 3 of Leningrad was extended until 2030. The corresponding license for the station was issued by Rostechnadzor.
