The installed capacity of nuclear power plants in the world will grow to 873 GW by 2050

Written by Telegram channel of the Ministry of Energy Official

Mikhail Chudakov, Deputy Director General of the IAEA, spoke about this at a panel session on nuclear energy as part of the Russian Energy Week, the Official Telegram channel of the Ministry of Energy reports.

Currently, nuclear power plants are operated in 32 countries of the world. Another 30 states are preparing to build such facilities.

“We are seeing an increased interest in nuclear energy. According to our forecast, the installed capacity of nuclear power plants will grow to 873 GW by 2050, said Mikhail Chudakov. At the recent IAEA General Conference, a record number of countries declared the need to develop nuclear power. In total, these are 50 states, including 27 of the European Union.”

According to the Deputy Director General of the IAEA, the geopolitical situation, the energy crisis caused by sanctions and the destruction of Europe's hydrocarbon supply system have led to an increase in demand for nuclear energy. In some European countries, payments for consumed gas and electricity for the population increased by 3 or more times.

According to the IAEA forecasts, in order to achieve the global objectives of the global "green" agenda in the next 30 years, investments in nuclear energy should be 6 times more than in the past 30 years. “According to estimates, it will be necessary to invest 3 trillion USD, and, accordingly, to increase by 3-4 times the number of nuclear power units launched annually,” he added. “This is a serious task, but it is quite feasible if there is the determination and will of the leaders of states and the support of the population.”
