Argentinean candidate Rafael Grossi received the required two-thirds of the vote in a vote of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency from 35 states. The election of the new IAEA Director General was held in connection with the death of the former head of the organization, Japanese diplomat Yukiy Amano in July 2019.
Rafael Grossi held senior positions at the IAEA from 2010 to 2013. The new CEO must take office no later than January 1, 2020.
