“In particular, we discussed energy issues. We agreed that our energy ministries will develop the issue of direct electricity supply to Latvia, and not through neighboring countries” , Sergey Rumas said.
According to the Prime Minister, there is a great potential for cooperation in the field of cargo transportation. “Belarus, as a landlocked country, is very interested in the potential of Latvian ports for transshipment of a wide variety of Belarusian cargo. And we also agreed that this issue will be one of the main ones in the work of the intergovernmental commission headed by our ministers of transport”, the head of Belarusian government explained.
Sergei Rumas drew attention to the fact that relations between Belarus and Latvia are developing very fast; good cooperation has been established at the political level. “We are very grateful to Latvia for helping us build good, trusting relations with the European Union, and helping to build investment and credit cooperation,” he emphasized.
As for mutual trade, in 2019 it sank somewhat, but the head of Belarusian government is confident that in 2020 it will be possible to rectify the situation.
“The potential for developing relations with Latvia is probably the greatest among all our neighboring countries. And it depends on the governments how much we can implement it today”, Sergey Rumas summed up.
As previously reported, Latvia does not exclude the possibility of purchasing electricity in Belarus. This topic was also discussed in the context of the commissioning of Belarusian NPP. The Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia supported the proposal of the Ministry of Economy that in the event Lithuania suspends trade in electricity with Belarus, trade will be transferred from Lithuanian to Latvian border to ensure direct supplies.
