Samples of air, water, soil, bottom sediments and vegetation were taken for laboratory research. Two air-filtering installations for sampling radioactive aerosols and gaseous radioactive iodine were placed at a regular observation point at the Markuna meteorological station. Along with this, samples were taken to determine the radioactive carbon and tritium in the air. The volume of air pumped amounted to more than 30 thousand cubic meters.
The most effective use of the obtained measurements of "zero background" may be the conduct of systematic observations of the radioecological situation in the region. It is advisable to carry out repeated measurements a year after the physical start-up of Belarusian NPP with the participation of representatives of the interested public.
Practical experience and the results of a public pre-operational survey can be replicated at other nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities in various countries.
