The solemn launching ceremony of the project was held at Uzexpocenter during Vladimir Putin’s visit to Uzbekistan. "Today we are opening a new strategic direction of cooperation with the Russian Federation - the development of nuclear energy. This project forms a new cluster, its implementation will further develop the industrial potential and create jobs in various sectors of the country's economy," Shavkat Mirziyeev said.
Specialists of the Agency "Uzatom" and the state corporation "Rosatom", who watched the ceremony in the videoconference mode, announced the start of engineering surveys to select the construction site of the first NPP in Uzbekistan.
The nuclear power plant will consist of two VVER-1200 “3+” generation units with a capacity of 1,200 MW each, which are the most modern and safe.
Atomic energy is environmentally friendly. NPPs do not form harmful carbon monoxide. As a result of the launch of the nuclear power plant, significant amounts of natural gas will be saved. Carbon dioxide emissions will decrease to 14 million tons and nitrogen oxides by 36 thousand tons.
The initiative of Uzbekistan on the implementation of the National Program on the Use of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes was supported by the IAEA experts and expressed their intention to assist in its implementation.
