Nuclear security should remain free from political sentiment - Ministry of Energy of Belarus

Nuclear security should remain free of political sentiment, Deputy Energy Minister of Belarus Mikhail Mikhaduk said today at a plenary meeting of the 63rd session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), BelTA has learned.

“Nuclear security must remain indivisible, technically and practically justified and free from any political mood. We hope that nuclear security issues will be exclusively unifying in nature, and international cooperation should be built on the basis of respect for the sovereign right of states to develop their nuclear energy"- Mikhail Mikhaduk said.

According to him, the IAEA technical cooperation program is widely recognized and of particular value for Member States, including Belarus, the ongoing technical cooperation projects use the best world experience for the sustainable development of the national nuclear energy program, nuclear science and technology, nuclear medicine.

The deputy minister thanked the agency for its significant contribution to solving the problem of sustainable development of Belarusian regions affected by the Chernobyl accident. The Belarusian side also welcomes the deepening cooperation between the IAEA and the Joint Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research - Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences.

Belarus fully supports the work of the IAEA to monitor the implementation of safeguards in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. “We consider this activity as an important element of the global system of international security and the basis for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, share the appropriateness of its further strengthening and increasing efficiency. At the same time, we consider it important that safeguards implementation mechanisms remain understandable, objective, and technically verified. They should be based on mutual trust and international agreements concluded between the parties," Mikhail Mikhaduk said.

In addition, the Belarusian side expresses its support for the efforts of the IAEA to strengthen nuclear security. "The global nature of risks and threats in the field of nuclear security requires adequate action on the part of states and the agency, which has a coordinating role in international cooperation on this subject," the deputy minister said.

On behalf of the Belarusian government, Mikhail Mikhaduk praised the activities of the IAEA over the period since the previous session of the General Conference and supported the approval of the annual report of the agency.
